Benue leaders in Diaspora urge FG to end killings

Leaders of Benue State indigenes in the diaspora have called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts in addressing the growing insecurity and recurring attacks across the state. In a joint statement on Tuesday, the Mutual Union of Tiv in America and Idoma USA expressed deep concern over “persistent and coordinated attacks” in local government areas such as Ukum, Guma, Otukpo, Apa, and Agatu. Signed by the President of MUTA, Professor Akaa D. Ayangeakaa, and Chief Edwin Ochai, President of Idoma USA, the statement noted that many had been killed and more than two million displaced as a result of the violence. “In May, over 70 people were reportedly killed in Gbagir, Ukum LGA, and just days ago, more than 200 lives were lost in Yelewata, Guma LGA,” the statement read. Ayangeakaa described the attacks as “organised assaults” and urged the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive action. “It is time for the Federal Government to step in comprehensively—beyond statements—and protect our people,” he said. The diaspora groups called for the deployment of security forces to high-risk areas and an independent investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible. “We urge the Federal Government to prioritise justice, not just reconciliation. Related News “Communities must be able to return to their homes safely, with support for rebuilding what has been lost,” Ochai added. The groups also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure an inclusive dialogue involving Benue stakeholders and civil society, emphasising that the crisis should not be framed as a conflict between equal parties. “Our communities are not waging war—they are under siege,” the statement said. Acknowledging reports of the President’s planned visit to Benue on June 18, the groups expressed hope that it would lead to meaningful action. “We believe it presents an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, compassion, and a renewed commitment to justice,” Ayangeakaa said. Ochai stressed that the crisis threatens not only Benue but also national food security. “The farmers of Benue feed the nation. A threat to Benue is a threat to Nigeria’s food security,” he said. The diaspora leaders urged security agencies, humanitarian bodies, and international partners to support recovery and peacebuilding efforts in the state.

It is clear that if we are to attract investment, create jobs, and drive economic growth, we must first ensure the safety of our people and property.” Idoma Association USA is a non profit and non governmental organization formed in the US with a mission that includes but not limited to promoting economic and educational growth within our communities in Nigeria and unity among the Idoma people in the United States of America.
